Cults such as the 'church of christ' that say water baptism is needful and essential for (today's) salvation are confused about Acts 2:38 and how it applies. Water baptism at that point was still a sign of faith towards Christ (still wasn't part of salvation, even then) for a jew who had left judaism to become a Christian believer. No strictly physical element (save the blood of Christ, a unique, one-time exception to that, since it was God's blood) ever bought eternal salvation, in particular H20. The odd thing is that (at least in the C of C I mentioned, above) they still believe you can 'lose' it, even after you're baptized. How's that for a confusing doctrine? You'd think if water was 'it' that it would stay 'it' forever, right? Nope, because they don't leave it at that, but add in keeping commandments and doing good, etc. That's not grace, folks, and it is an 'in his face' affront to Jesus' eternal sacrifice for us on the cross! Believe the gospel and trust in Christ, (as he is presented in your Bible, not the fiction most people create) casting aside the foolish beliefs of men who wrest the scriptures to their own destruction, lest they repent.
